The Apex Flex is a patent-pending subdermal security key from VivoKey Technologies that enables an always-available, completely autonomous separation of cryptographic functions from vulnerable general-purpose computing platforms like your smartphone or computer. The ability to carry your OTP authenticator, PGP, and other cryptographic keys with you and perform cryptographic functions “in vivo” (generate OTP codes, encrypt/decrypt data, etc.) without ever passing private keys to the NFC interface you interact with is a major advancement for personal digital identity and data security.

Your Apex Flex kit includes the following parts.

• Apex Flex implant, sealed in a Tyvek pouch and gas plasma sterilized
• Special 4G (5 mm) flex installation needle (unoiled)
• 1 pack of sterile surgical needle lubricant

Manufacturing the Apex Flex

The Apex Flex implant is manufactured in small batches in the USA. After inspection and cleaning, it is sealed in a Tyvek sterilization pouch with a process indicator and then sterilized using gas plasma. A batch label with processing and product information is affixed to the pouch, and the pouch is sealed in a polymer bag to protect the sterilization pouch from contamination during storage and shipping.

Using the Apex Flex

Once you have your Apex Flex installed, take your smartphone. Install the VivoKey Apex Manager app and the Fidesmo app. Open the Fidesmo app, scan your Apex, and get a list of supported applets you can deploy on your Apex. Applets are available from multiple vendors on the Fidesmo platform, and VivoKey also releases its own applets like the OTP applet and the NFC Sharing applet.

VivoKey Applets

VivoKey has developed a range of applets that run on your Apex Flex! Here are some links:

• OTP Authenticator – This one-time password applet replaces many two-factor authenticator applications that store and generate OTP codes on the phone itself, making them vulnerable to loss, theft, etc. With the OTP applet running on your Apex, you just need to install the Apex Manager on ANY smartphone to generate and view your OTP authenticator codes without risking your security.

• Tesla Keycard – After installation, you can register your Apex as a keycard with your Tesla 3, Y, X*, S* and use it to unlock and drive away. *Only for Model X and S built in 2021 or later.

• NFC Share – you can easily share data with others by tapping a smartphone to your Apex! You can share URLs, digital vCard business cards, or even binary or raw text data. Available data sizes range from 1kB to 32kB!

WARNING – Fidesmo Pay is not supported for Apex Flex or any implants. We recommend the NxtPay.

Professional installation notes

The Apex Flex is approximately 7.5 mm wide and 28 mm long, with an average thickness of 0.4 mm. Installation should always be performed by a professional.

• Do not install it under a gripping surface (e.g., do not install on the palm).

• Do not place over or parallel to joints (flex devices are only “semi-flexible”)

Important information about flex products in general

• The biopolymer is tested and certified to ISO 10993 and USP Class IV. However, the end product has not been tested after processing, meaning material changes during processing could potentially make the end product unsafe in some way.

• There is no “preferred” location for implanting a flex device. Customers are free to implant a flex device anywhere on the body, as long as it is within the fascial layer between the dermis and muscle tissue and not in a flexing area or under a gripping surface. However, the side or edge of the hand is not recommended due to high tension in that area. Work with your installer to determine the best and safest location for your flex device.
