Dual-Implantat NeXT

The first implant designed for both low-frequency and high-frequency applications.

One implant… two frequency ranges.

The NeXT combines the xNT and the xEM into a single implant. What makes it special is its extremely small size.
Unlike cheap Far East products, this so-called “tag” is only 14 mm long.

The applicator has also been improved for even more precise insertion. This means implantation should take no longer than 2 seconds.

Since you never know which frequency ranges you will encounter “out there,” it is generally wise to be prepared for both high- and low-frequency systems. On the one hand, you can easily copy (clone) an existing low-frequency card (e.g. HID) onto your implant (using this tool), and on the other hand, you can store all kinds of information on it and use it as a tag for applications such as access control.

The NeXT Value Kit includes the following products and materials for professional implantation:

The following accessories are also included in the NeXT Value Kit. These tools are designed for field detection and help you identify the type of reader in use. They also indicate the optimal position and orientation for presenting your NeXT implant to any reader for reliable performance.

Our xLED field testers show you the optimal position and orientation to couple your NeXT implant with compatible HF and LF readers (e.g. smartphones), and our RFID diagnostic card provides information about the frequency, duty cycle, and operating characteristics of RFID systems.

The Single version includes only the NeXT implant, preloaded in a syringe.

NTAG Chip Security

Why is this important?

The NFC chip used in this product belongs to the NTAG family by NXP. This type of chip was originally designed for typical NFC applications such as smart posters, labels, and other disposable uses, where the memory content is written once and then locked to prevent further modification. This is achieved using built-in “lock bytes,” which are OTP (one-time programmable). Once these lock bytes are activated to protect memory blocks, they cannot be unlocked. Once a memory block is locked, it becomes permanently read-only, which is not ideal for an implantable chip.

In addition, many common NFC smartphone apps and software tools provide options to “lock” or “protect” a tag, making it very easy to accidentally lock your xNT and render it read-only. For this reason, we have disabled the ability to modify or set the lock bits on the NTAG chip in this product.

In addition to the lock bytes, the NTAG offers a 32-bit password protection feature. This can be used to protect write access only, or both read and write access to the user memory of the NTAG chip. Regardless of what some NFC smartphone apps may indicate, it is not possible to remove or disable the password, only to reset it to the factory default hexadecimal value of 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF.

If the password is not changed and remains at the factory default, anyone could easily authenticate, change the password, and then write data or modify protection settings, effectively locking you out of your own implant. For this reason, we have set a standard password value of 0x44 0x4E 0x47 0x52, which corresponds to the ASCII code for “DNGR” (some older batches of NeXT chips use the password 0x4E 0x45 0x78 0x54, corresponding to “NeXT”).

Finally, many of the critical configuration bytes used by NTAG chips are stored on the last pages of the chip’s memory. This means it is possible for an NFC application that does not properly recognize or respect the chip’s memory layout to accidentally attempt to write NDEF records beyond the intended user memory area. If the data being written exceeds the available memory pages, the excess data may overwrite configuration bytes containing critical settings. Accidentally writing to these memory pages can irreversibly lock the chip configuration.

For this reason, the configuration bytes are protected by the NTAG password function, preventing them from being written to or modified. When your implant leaves our facility, the entire user memory is fully accessible and writable, while the configuration bytes and password values are protected against accidental or malicious overwriting.

Once your implant has been inserted, you can use any NFC smartphone app to write data to the tag without worrying about accidentally locking it, modifying configuration bytes, or having someone maliciously change your password. We recommend using the NXP TagWriter app.
